7 Reasons to Make Plans

Making plans can be a lot of fun, you are imagining how you are going to accomplish a goal. In many ways you are already living the path you are going to take.
It can be very exhilarating.

It does take a lot of work though, which is why some try to avoid making plans.
I want to give you 7 reasons to sit down today and make your plans.

1. They give you an overview
When you plan a project, a day or a goal you get an overview of what needs to be done and in what order it should be done. This overview is great to have, you know what you need to do and since you have it written down you know that you don’t have to keep it in mind and constantly think about it to make it reality.

It takes a lot of pressure of and it gives you a chance to use this holistic view to come up with new ideas and opportunities.

2. They make you more efficient
Since you learn what needs to be done and in what order you can start with number one on the list without worry that you are working on the wrong task. You don’t have to constantly question if you are working on the right things.

This lets you focus 100% on the task at hand which makes you a lot more efficient working.

3. They let you spot problems before they become crises
When you take a holistic view and get an overview you can quickly see problems and you can see what putting the problems off might lead to. They let you therefore be proactive and take care of a problem before it becomes a crisis.

Problems are usually a lot easier to handle which makes them faster to resolve then full blown crises.

4. You can find new opportunities
In the same way that you spot potential problems, you can spot potential possibilities. You might see a part of the market that you hadn’t thought of before, you might see an opportunity to improve one of your products or since you have the time to think creatively you might come up with a completely new marketing strategy.

5. They let you be creative
When you free up time by making a plan it gives you more time to be creative. When you take the holistic view you will be able to spot the areas in which you might need to strengthen yourself or your company, therefore you can use your free time to come up with solutions to your short comings and become even stronger in the market place.

6. They help you start thinking long term
Most every decision is made best when considering the long term consequences. If you look at a decision only thinking about what short term gratification it gives you or even how it might affect your next 12-24 months you will often make a decision based on these short term benefits, in the long run say 5-20 years another choice might be better, a choice you might not even have considered if you were only looking for short term benefits.

When you make plans you are looking long term, you are already thinking about what you want in 3-5-10-20 years from now, your decisions will be based on how you can accomplish your goals.

7. They let you know what you need before you need it
This is the great part about planning, because you have spotted your potential problems, your opportunities, you have crystallized your idea and you have made a plan of action, you know exactly what you need, be it skills, capital, resources or/and people to accomplish your goal.

It is easier to gather as much as possible before you begin then having to stop in the middle and try to add new skills or capital then.

  1. Daniel,
Good set of reasons for making plans. I think the anticipated results of good plans create positive feelings and we are better, happier more energized people when we have positive feelings.

Great post! I’ve always been a big believer in the benefits of planning something before you get going.

I think a lot of bloggers miss this and end up a few months into their blog or online business and are completely scattered and unable to make anything happen.

A little planning can go a long way!

      Hey Graham.

      You are very right.
It goes for people in all walks of life, we leave a lot up to chance and therefore don’t take the opportunities they get.
