How Doing Everything Yourself is going to Get Nothing Done

What causes most businesses to fail is a leader who cannot let go; who cannot delegate and doesn’t trust others.

The same goes for people, most people fail because they don’t ask for help. They try to learn everything themselves and they block their opportunities by closing themselves in.

Other people can help you in a multitude of ways.
I want to share some with you, ways that have helped me and have made a difference in my life.

Your contacts are one of your most important assets.

I can proudly say that I have never been unemployed.
Whenever I decided to change jobs, I let my friends know and they used their contacts to help me get new job offers.

I continuously get job offers from friends and their friends. I have been given many opportunities to grow by meeting new people and have started different projects with contacts.

Building a network will make a big difference in your life. Social media can make this even easier, using Facebook and LinkedIn keep you in touch with people you otherwise might not have time for.

Remember, the most important part of building a network is sustaining it.
I have a rule for myself;
“Call at least one friend (contact) every day and send one an email”

By doing this I keep my social life alive and keep my network strong.

This method was taught to me by Brian Tracy in his book “Maximum Achievement”.

Building a group of likeminded people, with complementary abilities and meeting once a month (for example) to discuss each other’s projects and give feedback, is a great method.

If you need help with marketing, you talk to the ones with marketing as a specialty, if your problem is with economics, talk to those people.

You will get feedback on your ideas, give feedback to others and know that no one in the group is going to steal your ideas or try to ruin your opportunities since you are all there to help each other improve as a group.

If you can successfully build a mastermind group, you can be sure of your coming success.

Friends – Support
Friends fill another role than just the shallow function of the network.
They are your support net. Are you in trouble, having problems, losing your way or your motivation, your friends will be there to pick up the slack and help you out.

Nothing can substitute having good friends.

Doing too much work yourself is a sure fire way to burn out.
Delegating tasks, outsourcing to others will save you time and in the long run money.

If you don’t have to focus on the smaller details of your business or your life you can focus on the larger questions.

One debate me and my wife always get into is the value of having a cleaning lady.
I consider paying 20-30 dollars/hour to have my house cleaned; giving me the time to work on other things (or relax) is worth the 20-30 dollars since when I work I make more per hour, so if I can skip 1 hour cleaning and work 1 extra hour, that is money in my pocket.

My wife doesn’t agree, so far she has won the discussions, but the war isn’t over!

The point is, can you delegate things you don’t necessarily have to do yourself to others who could even do it better. You can spend your time on more important tasks that can generate more money for you long term.

Action Exercises
1. Build your network
Either by using services such as LinkedIn or Facebook, or by calling a friend every day, make sure you sustain your network.

2. Delegate what you can
Take an inventory of everything you do in a day, is there anything you do that you don’t necessarily have to do yourself or that someone else can do better?
If you, try to find a way to delegate or outsource it to someone else ASAP.

3. Start building your mastermind group
Identify people you would like to have as a part of your group and then reach out to them. You will be surprised at how many will be willing to join, or work as a private mentor for you.

    Awesome post Daniel :) I agree with your points. Nothing beat forming a mastermind group. Your group will surely help you break new grounds. Delegation is important, if you can’t delegate, I doubt if you will get things done in a good way. Thanks for sharing. You rock :)

    I love the idea of a mastermind group. A few years back we started a group for people who had online businesses . We met monthly for breakfast and I learned a lot from them! I’ve missed it ever since. Maybe this is a reminder for me to set a goal to have another mastermind group! Thanks!

      If you have the chance I see no reason not to be a part of a mastermind group. If people in your area work with internet marketing and have a chance for meetings, join! :) If they aren’t in your area you can always do it over skype (and invite me ;) ).

    Great post with solid advice. You know Napoleon Hill emphasizes the importance of having a mastermind group in Think and Grow Rich because of the power and ability to leverage the skills of others to support those skills which you lack. Not to mention, the power of multiple unique minds is nearly unlimited.

    I think there is very little more powerful than having a group of supportive people you trust to help you through your journey of success!

    These are valid points!

    We all need others and especially in business, we have to work with others to achieve bigger success.

    And talking about mastermind groups, I would like to join/form one this year. I have no experiences of mastermind groups before, but what I have read so far about this is very encouraging.

    BTW, I have the same book (Brian’s book) that you mentioned in your post but some years have already passed when I read it the last time. I have forgotten most of his lessons – have to re-read that book again :)

    You make some good points here, and I couldn’t agree with you enough when you mention how building and sustaining a network can do wonders for one’s business.

    Being a blogger, the blogging community is really a wonderful place to start if you want to build a network. I’ve met hundreds of awesome bloggers over the years in my own niche, and it’s really an amazing feeling when you take it upon yourself to actively reach out and help those around you. I’ve even built some pretty close friendships with some of the people I blog with, and they’ve all been a tremendous help and support when I’ve needed it. I’m also always there for them, just like they are for me.

    It’s really a powerful feeling and a wonderful gift to have – the bonds that you create in everyday life. And I can’t imagine myself anywhere else than where I am at this moment, writing about what I love and following my passion with the friends I adore.

    Cherish your connections. Reach out to other bloggers; you never know when your kindness will come back to reward you.

      May I ask what your most profound experience when building a team has been?

      • Hi Daniel,

        Honestly, I’m not sure if I can say any one profound experience. There are friendships that I’ve built through networking, and I just love the feeling of helping and growing with another. As far as I’m concerned, that alone makes blogging worth it.

        And there’s just so many people in my life right now that I think are worthy to mention; I can’t possibly just mention one individual or experience.

        But, while I can’t really say the most profound moment, I can give you an example of a profound moment that has stuck with me even until now. Specifically when someone who I had met almost a year ago before had sent me a copy of the P90X Cardio CD, without my asking and totally unexpected. We were talking about fitness routines and programs when she then, out of blue, asked me what my address was and if I’d like a copy of one of the fitness CDs she uses (for free). I didn’t ask for it – and when she asked me if I’d like a copy, I just sat there in shock. Needless to say, I was speechless and totally beside myself. I will never forget that simple act of kindness of going above and beyond to help a friend, even if she may not know me in real life.

        Since I’ve met her, she has also been a significant part of my life and my blog. I sometimes go to her for advice (even about personal things), and I’ll always be there for her when she needs help or just a listening ear. That’s how powerful true networking is. And, personally, I don’t like to use the word networking to describe it – in my opinion, it doesn’t incorporate everything that networking is, if that makes sense. Instead, I prefer to use friendship building (or something of that nature), because that’s essentially what you’re doing when you reach out toward others and make a difference in another person’s life.

        You’re building a positive relationship that will reward you a hundred fold if you take the time to cultivate it.

          Networking has made a huge impact in my life as well. My current job I got thanks to contacts, same with my last job and most of my success as a personal coach come from people I know.

  6. Hi Daniel,

    I have been masterminding on weekly basis for almost 10 years. Currently I’m in three mastermind groups. Two of those groups are focused on internet marketing. In one we discuss the mechanics of having an online presence (site design, WordPress expertise, etc.). In the other we focus on strategy (monetizing the business, product development, networking, etc.). Just as you recommend, these are groups of likeminded people and the support we offer each other is unbelievable.

    My third group consists of individuals from numerous industries and areas of expertise. We come from all walks of life. I find this group to be as valuable as the other two. Having a new perspective, and not necessarily one from within the same industry, is extraordinary.

    I am so glad to see someone writing about the value of masterminding! Thank you!

    I also loved your points on delegating work. Here’s a story you can share with your wife.

    I was at a wealth building event where the speaker had everyone in the room stand. You could continue to stand as long as you answered yes to the questions she asked. She asked questions like; ‘Do you have a personal financial statement and is it current?’, ‘Do you own your own business?’, ‘Do you have a team supporting you in your business?’ Eventually only a handful of people remained standing.

    Then she asked, ‘Do you have someone who cleans your house for you?’ This got a good laugh while half of those who remained standing took their seats. Her point was: You should not be doing things that can be hired out inexpensively. Your time is far too valuable. Her little exercise made the point brilliantly.

    I couldn’t agree with you more Daniel. Great post!

      I have seen in the comments to this post that most people aren’t part of a mastermind group. How did you come to join yours? Have you initialized it or been invited?

      • Yeah I noticed that too – especially as someone who is considering starting a coaching mastermind program. :) Years ago masterminding was part of a program I joined and participated in for one full year. During that time I masterminded with three different groups of entrepreneurs.

        Since that time I have formed my own groups. I’ve invited people to join me. Occasionally another group member will invite a new person to our group but only after presenting the prospective member to the group first.

        Most of my mastermind groups have been incredible and it’s been because of the participants. A good group consists of: People who show up – every single week. People who are in action, have goals, and are committed to a dream or vision. People who are able to allow others to hold them accountable and are open to constructive feedback. People who don’t get lost in stories.

        There’s an art to having a great mastermind group. I’d be happy to talk with you about this more. Any time. Are you up for a Skype call?

        I’m rooting for you in your argument about having a house keeper! :)

    That’s some dang good advice Daniel, and it’s something I need to implement into my daily routine.

    I also loved what you said about the debate you’re having with you wife. Very funny, but also very relevant. If we can make more money doing other things, then why not outsource?? At least, that’s the way I see it. Nothing worse than getting caught up in the little details of day to day. I want to tackle the big picture, ya know?

      I try to outsource as much as possible, as long as the value I can create doing other things outways the cost of outsourcing, it is a good investment.

  8. I am big believer in the power of mastermind groups. There is a great story about Jack Canfield asking Tony Robbins why when they were in the same business (personal growth) and both worked equally hard that Tony was so much more successful. Tony Robbins asked who was in his mastermind group and when told he remarked “There’s the problem). Jack was in a mastermind group with successful people, Tony was in a mastermind group with REALLY successful people. Billionaires think differently than millionaires.

      On the contrary, I think you get it. Your action exercise pretty much states it. 1) Build your network, I would add, build a business network that is aligned with your business (Brand).
      2) Delegation is the first step in the process of firing yourself
      3) The mastermind focus will create the value in your business beyond what ‘you’ can do as an individual. The less your business relies on you, the more valuable it becomes.

      The key is, as you already know: You have to be able to let go!

  10. Dude, you’re a rock star, Daniel. Wise beyond your years, man. :) And these were some lessons I have had to learn the HARD way. Let me tell you.

    It came honestly. I worked in a field (church ministry) where I needed people to do certain things but couldn’t get people to commit to it, so I learned to do it all myself. I drove the van, I started the after-school program, I made all the visits to places. And I wore myself out. It’s definitely not the way to do everything.

    I love the mastermind concept. To know how the system works and then trust people to carry it out in their own way. This way it empowers them. Thanks for sharing!

      What is great about your experience is that you have done all the roles, as they say “A great general does at least every task expected of them working for him at least once”.

      Since you have tried everything out, you can now show and expect others to do it as well.

  11. As a small business owner these points are spot on Daniel. It’s to easy to try and do everything yourself — and you become your most expensive resource as you cost yourself to much by not letting go.

    I like Bills point of trying fire yourself. Could be a fun year :)
