Return again with the chaotic family of former supervillain turned mischievous hero 'Gru' in Despicable Me 3, an animated film that takes us on a crime-filled adventure once more. But this time, Gru faces a bigger challenge when he discovers he has a long-lost twin brother! How wild will this installment be? Let's find out.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

Not long after Gru and Lucy start working as anti-villain agents, they fail to capture Balthazar Bratt (voiced by Trey Parker), a former 80s child star turned insane criminal. This incident causes Gru and Lucy to lose their jobs, and family life begins to shake. But then, Gru is suddenly invited by a mysterious butler to meet 'Dru,' his twin brother who was hidden since childhood. They look identical except for Dru's full head of cool hair. Dru invites Gru to become a villain again to steal a giant diamond. Meanwhile, the Minions have their own story as they break away to find a new boss in the underworld.

Performance and Characters

Steve Carell returns to voice Gru excellently, but the standout in this installment is that he also voices 'Dru,' the twin brother, with clearly distinct personalities. Gru is reserved and serious, while Dru is cheerful and loves luxury. The vocal performance makes it easy for the audience to distinguish the characters. Kristen Wiig still plays Lucy, trying to adjust as a stepmother. The three girls (Margo, Edith, Agnes) remain cute and play important roles in adding color to the story. But special mention goes to Trey Parker as Balthazar Bratt, a villain who is both funny and scary at the same time, especially with the 80s culture references that give the film a unique charm.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

Kyle Balda, co-director from the previous installment, returns to helm and maintains the franchise's identity well. The visuals are beautiful and colorful, especially the scenes in the underworld and Dru's mansion, which look extravagantly over-the-top. The score by Heitor Pereira and soundtrack songs from that era like '99 Luftballons' and 'Take On Me' perfectly create the 80s atmosphere. The camera movement in action scenes is smooth, though some scenes may feel too childish for adults, but it's still fun in the family film style.

Editorial Analysis

Despicable Me 3 is an installment with both strengths and weaknesses. The strength is the addition of new character Dru, who adds depth to Gru, and the warm family relationship portrayal. However, the main villain Balthazar Bratt may not be as memorable as previous villains. The plot moves too fast in some parts, especially the Minions' storyline, which feels more like a short film than an integral part of the main movie. Nevertheless, the film still conveys the message of family and accepting differences well. Although not as outstanding as the first film, it's still an enjoyable movie suitable for families seeking light entertainment.

Verdict

In conclusion, Despicable Me 3 is an animated film that can be enjoyed casually by families. Although not as good as the first film, it still has jokes and warmth to make you laugh and smile. Suitable for a holiday with kids or die-hard fans of Gru and the Minions who want to see the story continue.
